Finse Swastika

The Finnish Swastika

It is not a popular subject in Finland: the swastika. While the Nazi symbol is banned in most European countries, the swastika has official status in Finland. The symbol can be seen on Air Force flags, military uniforms, medals of honor, and is even incorporated into the presidential flag.
The Finnish swastika has nothing to do with Nazi Germany, professor Teivo Teivainen of the University of Helsinki almost says. Its use as a military symbol dates back to Finnish independence in 1917. The country needed new military emblems and seized the ancient symbol that had been used by Finnish nationalists before.
After the Second World War, the swastika of fighter planes and tanks was removed, but in the late 1950s the symbol - traditional to the Finns - reappeared on official military occasions.
