De Fokker Atlantic Holland F.11/F-11A (Model 9)
The F.11 was a flying boat with two fixed floats under the wings.
The F.11A was the amphibious version with retractable landing gear.
There were two different retractable landing gear systems:
- one, where the floats on the wing continued to provide stability;
- The second version had no floats but two small sponsons* against the hull for stabilisation.
These aircraft only flew in the USA and Canada.
The aluminum hulls were built at the Fokker factory in Amsterdam and shipped to the USA.
The wings were built at the Fokker Atlantic facility.
There was room for five to six passengers and the engine was a Pratt & Whitney R-1690-B Hornet of 575 hp.
The engine could be mounted on the wing in either a pull or push position.
A tandem arrangement of two engines was also possible with both a push and pull propeller.
* Sponsons are protrusions on the sides of aircraft (or boats) primarily intended for better stability and protection.
