Fokker V.28

The Fokker V.28 / D-VIII

The V.28 was built in the summer of 1918.
This aircraft was similar to the V26/2 but had a different engine.
In the 3rd fighter competition this aircraft flew with both a 160 hp Siemens-Halske rotary engine, as well as a 160 hp Goebel engine.
The German army designated the V.28 D-VIII instead of EV.

This type was also the predecessor of the later Fokker D-IX.

Here's the V.28 with a 160 hp Goebel engine. Test pilot Richard Schulz found the V.28 flew excellently.

Here, from the spring of 1918, the V.28, derived from the V.26, but with a 145 hp Oberursel engine, while the 110 hp Le Rhône was also still used. With this engine, the V.28 participated in the second fighter trials of 1918. It had factory c/n 2725. In the autumn of 1918, the designation D.VIII was used alone, replacing the previous EV designation. At the third 1918 fighter trials, the rotary 160 hp Siemens-Halske engine also appeared as the 160 hp Goebel engine. This combination later appeared after the First World War in the Fokker D.IX.

The LVA flew with interned D-VIIIs. Here, the 309/18. Twenty D-VIII fighters were also smuggled into the Netherlands on the infamous smuggling trains. A number flew with the LVA, but they never had LVA identification numbers. They did, however, have the orange LVA spheres (cockades). The United States also purchased several D-VIIIs in Amsterdam.
