Travels to the Dutch East Indies 1924 – 1935
The Netherlands was a colonial power in those years, and its most important colony was undoubtedly the Dutch East Indies. Because the ferry took 24 to 30 days, a faster connection was politically and (potentially) economically attractive. From 1924 onward, much pioneering work was done, primarily with Fokker aircraft. That's why we're highlighting the "East Indies flights" on our website.
The text comes from the first four pages of "De vliegende Hollander," a publication of the Patria rusk factory. It's a book where the reader had to paste the pictures themselves, just like in the more famous Verkade albums.
The 1935 text has been retranslated into the 2022 Dutch version. In some cases, it contains derogatory remarks about local populations. We have retained these because it was common practice at the time to assume the superiority of Europeans.
Clicking on the photo will take you to a detailed description of the trip.
